Audi Reveals Its Next Big F1 Investment: A New Hinwil Campus
Audi’s planned campus will expand its Swiss home, with some facilities already operating and the full development scheduled for 2030.
Audi’s next major investment reaches beyond the race car. The team has unveiled plans for a new Formula One campus in Hinwil, designed to give its growing operation a home built around its ambitions.
Announced on October 1, the development sits less than a kilometer from the current factory. Parts began operating this summer, while completion of the full campus is planned for 2030.
The existing factory still has a job
The current Hinwil site will stay fully operational during construction. It will subsequently be redeveloped as the team’s manufacturing center and wind-tunnel operation.
Audi’s engine development and production will remain in Neuburg, Germany, and its technical center in Bicester, England, will also stay.
That means the investment builds on the team’s existing network. Hinwil continues to anchor an operation whose roots stretch back to Peter Sauber’s team, which entered Formula 1 in 1993.
Autosport reports that the inherited facilities have needed substantial investment, including modernization of the wind tunnel and the computing infrastructure used for aerodynamic development.
Better facilities, with people at the center
“Building a successful Formula 1 team is ultimately about people,” said Mattia Binotto, Audi’s CEO and team principal.
Binotto sees the campus as a way to recruit and retain talent, giving specialists an environment designed for collaboration.
That’s where the project’s competitive value will have to emerge. A new building can provide better working conditions, but the payoff comes through the decisions, designs and development work happening inside it.
For fans following Audi’s progress, the timeline is telling. This investment extends well beyond its debut season. The campus is part of the groundwork for the team Audi wants to become by 2030.
