ALONSO’S 2027 DECISION ISN’T ABOUT THE CAR. IT’S ABOUT F1 ITSELF.

Aston Martin’s recent progress has not settled Fernando Alonso’s future. The 45-year-old says whether he races in 2027 will depend more on Formula 1’s regulations than the performance of his car.

Fernando Alonso has made it clear that Aston Martin’s recent improvement will not determine whether he races in Formula 1 in 2027.

The 45-year-old’s current contract is up for renewal at the end of the 2026 season, and no extension or retirement decision has been announced. Although Aston Martin has made progress over the past two races, Alonso says the sport’s regulations—not the competitiveness of his car—will carry greater weight in his decision.

Aston Martin’s progress is not the deciding factor

Aston Martin’s recent Honda power-unit upgrade and changes introduced since Budapest have moved the team in a more competitive direction. Alonso scored his first points of the season with ninth place at the Dutch Grand Prix and said the result provided an important boost for the team.

However, improved performance alone will not convince him to continue. Alonso said he would remain fully committed whether he was fighting for 15th place or a podium, making it clear that the speed of the Aston Martin is not the central issue.

Alonso’s concern is Formula 1 itself

Alonso has been one of the strongest critics of Formula 1’s current power-unit regulations and believes the championship has moved away from what drivers and spectators expect from the sport.

“This is not the Formula 1 we grew up with,” Alonso said while discussing the direction of the championship. He hopes to contribute to future regulatory changes that could move the sport closer to what he considers “real Formula 1.”

His decision therefore goes beyond whether Aston Martin can produce a faster car. Alonso must also decide whether he still enjoys driving under the current formula and whether the direction of the championship gives him enough reason to continue.

His Aston Martin commitment could continue either way

Earlier this season, Alonso said his commitment to Aston Martin extends beyond his time behind the wheel. He remains convinced that the team’s expanded Silverstone operation, Honda partnership and long-term investment can eventually produce a championship contender.

That commitment should not be confused with confirmation that he will remain one of the team’s race drivers in 2027. Alonso could continue supporting the Aston Martin project without competing in Formula 1.

For now, the position is clear: Alonso’s 2027 race seat remains unconfirmed, and a faster Aston Martin will not settle the question by itself. Until Alonso announces his decision, neither a contract extension nor retirement should be treated as confirmed.
