FERRARI’S MONZA UPGRADE SETS THE STAGE. HAMILTON COULD BREAK SCHUMACHER’S RECORD IN RED.

Ferrari’s second power-unit upgrade of 2026 has arrived at Monza. If Lewis Hamilton converts it into victory, he will move clear of Michael Schumacher and give the tifosi a record-breaking home win.

Ferrari has deployed its second power-unit upgrade of the 2026 season at the Italian Grand Prix, giving Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc an important new weapon for the team’s home weekend at Monza.

The upgrade arrives through Formula 1’s Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities system. Ferrari qualified for two development opportunities after being assessed as more than four per cent behind benchmark manufacturer Red Bull in internal-combustion-engine performance. The first update appeared at the Austrian Grand Prix in June; the second is now fitted to both Ferraris at Monza.

THE UPGRADE OFFERS PROMISE—NOT A GUARANTEE

Friday provided encouragement without establishing Ferrari as the clear team to beat. Leclerc led Hamilton in a Ferrari one-two during first practice, but Mercedes responded in FP2 as George Russell set the fastest lap of the day.

Leclerc finished the second session only 0.120 seconds behind Russell, while Hamilton placed fifth, 0.457 seconds off the pace. Hamilton described the upgraded power unit as a step in the right direction but acknowledged that he still struggled to assemble a complete lap.

That leaves Ferrari firmly in contention, although the upgrade’s real value will be judged through qualifying and the race—not by its position in a Friday timesheet.

HAMILTON HAS MONZA HISTORY WITHIN REACH

Hamilton and Michael Schumacher currently share the record with five Italian Grand Prix victories at Monza.

Schumacher recorded all five of his wins with Ferrari—in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2006. Hamilton won once with McLaren in 2012 before adding four victories for Mercedes in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.

A victory on Sunday would give Hamilton an unprecedented sixth Monza win. It would also be his first Italian Grand Prix victory as a Ferrari driver and his second win for the Scuderia following his breakthrough Ferrari triumph in Spain earlier this season.

A RECORD CHASE WRAPPED IN SCHUMACHER HISTORY

The timing gives Hamilton’s opportunity another layer of significance. Ferrari is marking 30 years since Schumacher’s first Monza victory for the team in 1996, with the SF-26 carrying a special tribute appearance for the weekend.

Hamilton therefore has the chance to surpass Schumacher’s Monza total while driving a Ferrari created to honor the driver with whom he currently shares the record.

That would connect three eras in one result: Schumacher’s first Monza victory in red, Hamilton’s five previous wins with Ferrari’s rivals and a possible record-breaking sixth achieved as a Ferrari driver.

WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN FOR THE TIFOSI

Ferrari last won its home race through Charles Leclerc in 2024. A Hamilton victory in 2026 would carry a different kind of historical weight.

The tifosi would not simply be celebrating another Ferrari win at Monza. They would be watching a Ferrari driver establish a new all-time circuit record while wearing tribute colors dedicated to the man he had just surpassed.

The upgrade has opened the door, but Friday also showed how close the competition remains. Ferrari now has to convert its latest development into qualifying position, race pace and flawless execution.

If Hamilton can complete that final step on Sunday, the result would belong not only to him. It would become one of those rare Monza moments in which Ferrari’s past and present meet directly in front of the tifosi.
