Retirement Can Wait: Alonso Commits to Aston Martin for 2027
Fernando Alonso teased a farewell, then confirmed he’s staying with Aston Martin for 2027, still convinced he has the speed and desire to keep racing.
Fernando Alonso made his announcement sound like a goodbye. He reflected on his career, the places Formula 1 had taken him and everything he’d achieved. Then came the twist.
“I will retire from F1...but not yet.”
Aston Martin confirmed on September 29 that Alonso and Lance Stroll will remain its drivers for 2027. Alonso will turn 46 during the season, but his explanation for staying was straightforward: he still feels competitive, and he still wants to race.
The motivation hasn’t gone
Alonso said he took time to reach his decision. In the announcement video, he emphasized his speed, motivation and passion for the sport.
His team statement also pointed to his belief in Aston Martin’s leadership, people and facilities. He wants to remain involved in turning that potential into results.
That commitment carries weight after a difficult season. The AMR26 has struggled for competitiveness, and Alonso has openly criticized the demands of F1’s current regulations. Staying means taking on another year of that work without knowing how much better the results will be.
He isn’t treating 2027 as a farewell tour, either. Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, Alonso indicated that he could continue beyond next year if he keeps enjoying the challenge and has the opportunity.
Another season together, with work to do
Stroll’s confirmation means Aston Martin will retain the same pairing for a fifth consecutive season. The team described extensions to both drivers’ long-term contracts, confirming their participation in 2027 without announcing a final season for either.
For Aston Martin, continuity keeps two experienced drivers involved as it works to improve the car. Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll acknowledged that better performance remains the immediate priority, alongside the team’s longer-term ambitions.
Alonso’s decision gives Aston Martin another season with a driver who still believes he can make a difference. The challenge now is giving him a car that lets him show it.
