Russell Closed the Gap. Antonelli Wants Control Back.

George Russell took 15 points out of Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead in Baku. Antonelli heads to Sepang determined to restore his usual level.

George Russell gave himself a reason to keep chasing in Baku. Kimi Antonelli intends to make the next step considerably harder.

Russell’s Azerbaijan victory reduced his Mercedes teammate’s championship advantage from 81 points to 66. Antonelli recovered from 16th on the grid to fifth after his qualifying crash, but recovering lost ground wasn’t the weekend he wanted.

Now comes the Bahrain Grand Prix at Sepang in Malaysia, and a chance for the championship leader to answer.

Antonelli wants his confidence back

“But I’ll make sure I re-establish the order and just make sure that I am back to my usual level,” Antonelli said, in comments reported by AFP.

His assessment of Baku was blunt. He said he lacked the confidence to attack properly during the race and wasn’t mentally ready to push at his normal intensity.

That makes Sepang an important reset. Fifth place limited the damage after his qualifying mistake, but Russell was collecting the victory while Antonelli worked through the field.

For Antonelli, the immediate task is to put himself back in position to fight his teammate directly.

Russell needs to make it happen again

A 66-point deficit remains substantial. Baku helped Russell, but one strong weekend won’t close it.

That’s what gives their next meeting its edge. Russell needs to keep finishing ahead; Antonelli can interrupt that progress by returning to the form that has already brought him eight victories this season.

The challenge also changes with the venue. Sepang hosts F1 for the first time since 2017, giving both drivers a fresh test after Baku’s narrow streets.

Russell has made the gap smaller. Antonelli’s response now has to come on track.
