Audi’s latest F1 appointment comes with a practical aim: giving the people developing its power unit more room to concentrate on the engineering.

Thomas Fuhr will become CEO of Audi Formula Racing GmbH on November 1. Based in Neuburg an der Donau, the company develops and builds Audi’s F1 power unit.

The appointment strengthens the engine operation’s leadership. Mattia Binotto remains CEO and team principal of the Audi Revolut F1 Team.

What changes in Neuburg

Audi says Fuhr’s arrival will allow chief technology officer Stefan Dreyer to focus fully on technical development. Chief operating officer Christian Foyer will continue overseeing operations at the site.

Fuhr brings more than 30 years of engineering and leadership experience, including a spell leading Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from 2009 to 2012. His subsequent career includes senior roles across international engineering and manufacturing businesses.

Building on the first engine

Audi has already developed its first F1 power unit and taken it racing. Fuhr’s assignment is to help the organization build on that work.

For fans, a leadership appointment is harder to judge than a new front wing or a faster qualifying lap. Its value becomes visible through what the team can deliver afterward.

That is the significance of this move: clearer responsibilities behind the scenes, with the engineering progress still to come.
