83 POINTS BACK. NORRIS NEEDS A VERSTAPPEN-SIZED COMEBACK.

Two wins have changed Norris’s season. My take on whether he can sustain the 7.55-point-per-weekend recovery needed to catch Antonelli.

Two races have changed the conversation around Lando Norris.

He won in Hungary, then followed it with pole position and victory at Zandvoort. The Dutch Grand Prix was particularly convincing. Norris lost the lead to Kimi Antonelli at the restart but did not force the issue. He remained close, waited for McLaren’s strategy to create a tyre advantage and completed the decisive pass around the outside of Turn 1 before winning by 11 seconds.

The performance comeback is real.

Whether it can become a championship comeback is a much harder question.

THE MOMENTUM IS REAL

Across the four weekends from Silverstone through Zandvoort, Norris outscored Oscar Piastri 80–24. That turned a one-point deficit after Austria into a 55-point advantage over his teammate.

But Piastri is no longer the main target. Antonelli is.

Across those same four weekends, Norris scored 80 points to Antonelli’s 71. Despite Norris’s victories, he recovered only nine points on the championship leader.

The latest two races tell a more encouraging story. Norris scored 56 points across Hungary and Zandvoort, while Antonelli collected 38. That reduced the deficit by 18 pointsβ€”or nine per weekend.

That rate would be enough. The question is whether Norris can sustain it.

WHAT VERSTAPPEN ACHIEVED IN 2025

We saw how quickly a championship can change last season.

After the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix, Max Verstappen trailed Norris by 70 points with nine weekends remaining. He was also 104 behind championship leader Piastri.

Verstappen then produced an extraordinary finish. He scored 216 points across the final nine weekends compared with Norris’s 148, won six of the remaining Grands Prix and finished on the podium at every one.

He recovered 68 of the 70 points separating him from Norris and reached the final race with the championship still undecided. Norris ultimately held on by only two points.

Verstappen therefore gained an average of 7.56 points per weekend on Norris during that charge.

Norris now trails Antonelli by 83 points with 11 Grands Prix remaining. To erase that deficit, he must gain an average of 7.55 points per weekend.

The similarity is almost exact.

WHAT NORRIS MUST SUSTAIN

The mathematics prove that the deficit can be challenged. They do not make Norris the championship favourite.

Eleven Grands Prix and one Sprint remain, leaving 283 maximum points available. That is enough time, but Antonelli is not collapsing. He followed third place in Hungary with second at Zandvoort and has scored 71 points across the last four weekends.

Norris therefore cannot rely on his rival repeatedly failing to finish. He must continue winning while converting his own difficult weekends into strong points.

His last two-race recovery rateβ€”nine points per weekendβ€”would put him on course to close the gap. His four-race rateβ€”only 2.25 points gained per weekendβ€”would leave him well short.

That is why Monza and the races immediately following it matter. Hungary and Zandvoort created momentum. The next stretch will tell us whether Norris can maintain it.

THE FINAL TAKE

I am convinced that Norris has changed the direction of his season. I have also never bought the argument that he lacks the mentality for a title fight. Zandvoort strengthened that view: after losing the lead, he stayed composed and took back control when the opportunity arrived.

But calling this a championship comeback today would still be premature.

Verstappen’s 2025 charge shows what recovering this kind of deficit requires: victories, relentless podiums and almost no wasted opportunities. He produced all of that and still finished two points short.

Norris knows exactly how dangerous that momentum can become because he was the driver trying to survive it last year.

Now the roles are reversed.

The comeback has started. Whether it reaches Abu Dhabi is entirely up to what Norris does next.

What’s your take: can Norris sustain a Verstappen-level charge, or is an 83-point deficit too much against a consistent Antonelli?

Respectful disagreement is welcome; personal attacks, abuse and spam will be removed.
